Germany’s Marc Zwiebler delivered a stunning performance in the Men’s Singles semi-final as he crushed Japan’s Kazumasa Sakai in straight games, at the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix, in Canada, on Saturday, July 23.
World Number 16 in the international rankings, Zwiebler, who is the second seed in the Men’s Singles draw of US open, showed his class by beating his opponent in an impressive fashion by taking just 32 minutes in the court. He spared no chance for Sakai
throughout the match and finished the battle in straight games without facing any trouble.
Right from the start of the opening game, the German kept a firm grip on the pace of the game. He was playing with great precision and managed a good lead at the end of the first part by reaching at 11-7. Sakai failed to manage the pace of the game as he
threw away many points by selecting the wrong spots, which put him in trouble against the in-form German.
Zwiebler continued his roller-coaster run after the interval by playing top-class badminton. Sakai failed to stop the firing German as he made many unforced errors, which helped Zwiebler to maintain a good lead. The German clinched the opening game with
a comfortable margin of 21-15, in 19 minutes.
The second game was surprising for the huge crowd, as they witnessed the German playing with incredible speed. Zwiebler played to his maximum potential and showed no mercy to the Japanese in this set of the semi-final battle. Until the interval, the German
was miles ahead of Sakai by reaching 11-3.
After the break, he remained in great confidence and played wonderful strokes to put more pressure on the Japanese, who almost gave up fighting as the German was too strong for him. Zwiebler finished-off the second set with a stunning score of 21-8, in just
13 minutes. This Men’s Singles straight-set battle ended with a 21-15 and 21-8 score on the board.
In the final, Zwiebler will take on top seed, Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia, who had to dig deep into his reserves to beat Wong Wing Ki of Hong Kong in the semi-final of the championship.
