Marc Zwiebler stuns Taufik Hidayat in Men’s Singles quarter-final of US Open Grand Prix Gold 2011
Germany’s ace shuttler, Marc Zwiebler delivered a stunning performance as he defeated top seed, Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia in the Men’s Singles quarter-final of the US Open Grand Prix Gold 2011, in California, on Thursday, July 14.
World Number 17 and sixth seed in the Men’s Singles draw of the US Open, Zwiebler, played surprisingly well against the top seed, Hidayat, who was clearly lacking the finishing touch in his strokes. The German ended this quarter-final battle in straight-sets,
after taking a court time of 43 minutes.
World Number Four, Hidayat, opened the game in his usual calm style. Zwiebler, on the other hand, was playing convincingly well from the start as he kept his speed extremely high in the whole battle. Hidayat was struggling as his movement was not smooth
in the court. He was picking the bird quite late, which helped his opponent to play an attacking game.
Zwiebler was highly focused in the game as he knew that he is playing against one of the best shuttlers in the entire history of the game. He was also aware of the fact that Hidayat can change the game at any stage of the match.
The German played with incredible control and precision, which disturbed the flow of the top seed. Zwiebler clinched a one-game advantage by winning the first set in 23 minutes, with the score of 21-16.
In the following game, Zwiebler played with the same momentum against Hidayat, who was not playing his usual game as he surprisingly committed many errors in the set. Until the break in the second set, the German was leading the battle with an 11-8 score.
After the interval, Hidayat tried to pace up his strokes, but he failed to dominate the rallies as his challenger was playing fast and positive badminton. Zwiebler maintained the lead in the rest of the second set and won it by a margin of 21-15, in 20 minutes.
The straight-set match ended in 43 minutes with the victory of Zwiebler by a wonderful margin of 21-16 and 21-15.
