Marc Zwiebler stuns Taufik Hidayat to win Men’s Singles crown at the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix
Germany’s top player, Marc Zwiebler clinched the Men’s Singles crown after stunning Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat in the title-match of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix, in Richmond DC, Canada, on Sunday, July 24.
The second seed, Marc Zwiebler, played to his full potential and proved his skills by beating the former world champion and Olympic gold medallist, Taufik, in a straight-set battle which took 39 minutes of superb badminton from both shuttlers.
The German, who is currently World Number 16 in the international rankings, opened his campaign against the top seed Indonesian in an impressive manner, as he quickly built a wonderful lead by playing fast and perfect badminton. Taufik was lacking the speed
in his legs, as he was picking the bird late by moving slowly in the court.
However, the German was very fast in taking the shuttlecock early from all areas of the court. He was playing with aggression and remained successful in putting his opponent in a defensive position. Until the 60-second interval, Zwiebler was leading the
set with the margin of 11-8.
World Number Four, Taufik, was struggling in finding a better flow against the in-form Zwiebler, who was not sparing any chance for the Indonesian to get back in the game. The second seed German remained ahead of Taufik in the whole set and won it in 16
minutes with a 21-13 margin.
The second set was quite thrilling as Taufik started to play his usual game with a great touch of precision. However, Zwiebler also played well and remained close to his experienced challenger. Both seeded shuttlers moved forward with the same pace by playing
positive and aggressive badminton.
The score reached at the breathtaking stage of 20-20, as both shuttlers were playing a composed game and trying to avoid unforced errors. The huge crowd in the hall could not have asked for a more thrilling fight, as both shuttlers were touching the heights
of quality play.
At the crucial stage of 23-23, the German player delivered a terrific performance and clinched two consecutive points to finish-off the set with a 25-23 margin, in 23 minutes. The concluding score of this 39-minute title-match was 21-13 and 25-23.
