Marc Zwiebler tames Henri Hurskainen to secure Men’s Singles title at European Championships 2012
Marc Zwiebler, the top shuttler in Germany, defied all odds to secure Men’s Singles title at the European Championships 2012 in Sweden, on Saturday, April 21.
The fourth seeded Zwiebler, who has been placed at number 16 in the world rankings, remained impressive throughout the tournament and managed to win the final contest against Sweden’s Henri Hurskainen in a superb fashion.
Zwiebler played tremendous badminton in the title match as he was on a completely different level against the local shuttler and bagged the title easily.
On the other hand, Hurskainen could not live up to the expectations of his local fans as he could not match the craft of his German opponent and lost the title match without putting up strong impact.
Zwiebler consumed 42 minutes in the court to topple Hurskainen and became the European Champion for the first time in his professional career.
In the opening set of the match, both giant killers were facing each other. They defeated many seeded players in their way towards the final of the tournament.
However, it was Zwiebler who controlled the pace of rallies in the opening set of final match and remained in commanding position until the mid-game interval.
After the break, Hurskainen tried to play fast badminton against his higher ranked German opponent but failed to dictate the pace of rallies.
In the meanwhile, Zwiebler played with precision as he playing with remarkable precision and bagged the first set with a margin of 21-15.
In the second set, Zwiebler maintained their upper hand from the opening rallies and remained aggressive in the court.
He was in complete control and did not spare room for his local opponent to place his shots. Until the break, Zwiebler was miles ahead on the board.
After the interval, Zwiebler continued his roller coaster run as his opponent failed to put up strong resistance.
The higher ranked German was fully focused in the game and he ended the second set with a sensational margin of 21-13.
Zwiebler became the champion by winning the final encounter with a 21-15 and 21-13 score on the board.
