Marc Zwiebler thrashes Kazushi Yamada in the quarterfinal of All England Open badminton Championship
Germany’s Marc Zwiebler defeated Kazushi Yamada of Japan, in the men’s singles quarterfinal of the All England Open Badminton Championship 2011, at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham today. The German took 62 minutes and three sets to beat the Japanese,
who crushed Taufiq Hidayat of Indonesia in the first round and Wang Zhengming of China in the second round of the event. In the semi-final, Zwiebler will be facing either Lin Dan of China or Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam.
In the first set of the match, Zwiebler played positive badminton and remained quick by picking the shuttle c**k quite early. He established a reasonable lead of 11-7, in the opening half of the game. The Japanese covered the gap and leveled the score at
13-13. At this critical stage of the match, the German became aggressive and scored the remaining points without any trouble. Zwiebler consumed 16 minutes to win the first set with a 21-18 score on the board.
In the second set, Zwiebler was leading the game till the interval where he was ahead of the opponent at 11-7. The match became more interesting when both players increased the speed of the game to the maximum level. Kazushi again leveled the score at 15-15,
where the German made a few mistakes that gave an opportunity to the opponent to win the set by a 21-17 margin, in 24 minutes.
In the third game, both shuttlers remained toe-to-toe in the starting points. The score reached at 4-4, where Zwiebler started to build the lead and remained successful by reaching at 11-5, till the break. The speed of the German became incredibly fast and
his attacking game spared no chance for Kazushi to dominate the game.
After the break, the Japanese worked hard to match the speed of the opponent but lost control of the rallies. The German increased the gap by taking a comfortable lead of 14-7. Kazushi had no answer to the killing smashes and strong pushes of Zwiebler, who
was playing at his best. The German executed some wonderful strokes in the ending moments of the match and won the third game by a good margin of 21-15, in 22 minutes. The concluding score of the quarterfinal match was, 21-18, 17-21 and 21-15.
