Marcel Granollers and Tommy Robredo advance to the quarters at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters
Spaniards, Marcel Granollers and Tommy Robredo upset 7th seeded pair of French Michael Llodra and Serb Nenad Zimonjic with a breadstick on Tuesday. They registered a 6-2, 6-1 win over the seeds to advance into the quarter-finals
of the 2011 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters in Monaco.
The 20th ranked Spanish duo was in great shape this season and had a 6-2 win-loss record. They displayed tremendous skills in this tournament and overpowered their countrymen, Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco by
a comeback victory in a three set nail biter match in the first round.
Ranked 6th in the ATP World Tour doubles ranking, Llodra and Zimonjic on the other side of net were also in good shape and had a 9-5 win loss record this season so far. Zimonjic who is a two times defending champion
with Daniel Nestor and had won four titles in this ATP World Tour 1000 Masters event.
Spaniards played exceptionally well in the opening set and held their serves plausibly. They had much better first serve share of 78 percent as compared to their opponents’ 55 percent and registered an amazing 93 percent win on
it. In addition to this, Granollers and Robredo conceded zero breakpoint and converted two out of three breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to win the set with a convincing 6-2 score line.
The unseeded Spaniards improved their co-ordination into the second set as they had an awesome first serve share of 94 percent and earned 75 percent win on it. They perfected their gameplay and saved all the three breakpoints they
faced. The Spanish team held their entire serves spectacularly and converted three out of six breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to earn a breadstick.
The French Serbian tandem played poorly throughout the match. They committed several unforced errors and two double faults. Llodra and Zimonjic had a poor first serve share and earned only 50 percent win on it. Furthermore they
failed to convert the breakpoint opportunities they found to their advantage and saved only four out of nine breakpoints they conceded.
The Spaniards will next face top seeded Bryan Brothers or Latvian Serbian combination of Ernests Gulbis and Viktor Troicki and if they just practice hard and keep their co-ordination, they can overwhelm threat from any team.
On another court, Ukrainian Russian pair of Sergiy Stakhovsky and Mikhail Youzhny earned a breadstick against the third seeds, Austrian Jurgen Melzer and German Philipp Petzschner to advance with an upset victory to the quarters.
