Marcel Granollers dumps Mischa Zverev to clear round one – Gerry Weber Open 2012
Spanish sixth seed, Marcel Granollers, scuttled past the 190th ranked German, Mischa Zverev, to reach the second round of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle. He posted the final scores of 6-4, 6-2 against the German qualifier
taking just an hour and 15 minutes.
The match started off with serve holds at both ends and similar phenomenon was witnessed for the bulk of the opening set until the 22nd ranked Spanish stole a breakpoint in the ninth game to register a lead of 5-4. Zverev
was left with no other option but to break serve back in the following game but he just managed to win a single point and lost the opening battle after putting up a good strong fight.
Granollers didn’t waste time in dominating the proceedings of the second set; grabbed breakpoint in the third game and gusted away to a resounding lead of 3-1. He was in a very strong position that exerted a lot of pressure on
the 190th ranked German qualifier. The situation got worst for Zverev when his serve was broken in the fifth game that further consolidated the lead to 4-1 for the Spaniard.
A serve hold to love drowned the German to a trail of four games with scores running away in favour of Spaniard. He was tested a bit in the final serve game but managed to hold on with a cracking winner down the line that rounded
off the match proceedings.
Both contenders smashed three aces apiece but three double-faults from the German proved suicidal in the end. Granollers won 62 points in total compared to just 48 of his rival and converted three out of allotted nine breakpoints
to book a spot in the second round. Zverev couldn’t construct a single break serve opportunity in the whole match that proved to be the biggest reason for his downfall.
The sixth seed Spaniard will lock horns with the winner of the match between the likes of the German wildcard entrant, Tommy Haas, and the 20-year-old Aussie booming starlet, Bernard Tomic. The Aussie youngster is expected to win
the encounter.
