Marcel Granollers surprises Florian Mayer in second round – Rogers Cup 2012
Spanish star, Marcel Granollers, upset the 15th seed, Florian Mayer, in straight sets at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Wednesday. He nudged up a 6-3, 6-4 victory against the world number 23 to book a spot in the round of 16 at this Emirates Airline US
Open Series event held in Toronto, Canada.
The Barcelona native showed brilliant skills to avenge his loss in Dusseldorf last season. As a result, Granollers levelled the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-1 against the 28-year-old and advanced into the third round at this outdoor hard court tournament
held in Rexall Centre.
Granollers stepped into this Masters 1000 series in high spirits. He got the critical break in the fourth game to go 3-1 up. Despite squandering his lead in the very next game, the Spaniard stayed calm and got the breakthrough in the eighth game. He then
served out the opener with a 6-3 score line with poise.
Ranked 27th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Granollers improved his game in the follow-up set. The Spaniard got the desiderated break in the opening game and then swiped his entire serves without facing any barrier. He capitalised
on one out of two break chance to seal the deal by winning six games to four.
Summing up the 26-year-old’s performance in this battle, Granollers hammered nine aces to prevail. He also formulated a better first serve share of 61 per cent in contrast with the German’s 58 per cent and tremendously marked 31 out of 39 points on it.
Next up for Granollers is the French contestant, Jeremy Chardy, who stunned his third seeded compatriot, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in straight sets to set up this meeting. Chardy cashed in the lone break point opportunity to carve out a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory in
one hour and 28 minutes.
The top seed, Novak Djokovic, will accompany Granollers in the third round. He recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the Australian number one, Bernard Tomic, to progress. The Serbian ace smashed seven aces and capitalised on three out of nine break chances
to steal the spotlight.
He will square off Sam Querrey from America in the pre-quarters.
