The Borussia Dortmund defender has insisted that the Bavarian giants are his side’s main rivals as far as the title race is concerned.
Borussia Dortmund have been in sensational form this season in the Bundesliga and are currently leading the standings table with 52 points from the 23 games played. The reigning champions have a four point lead over Bayern Munich
with 11 games to go until the season ends.
Schmelzer claimed that the Munich giants can never be underestimated as they have great quality in their squad. He insisted that the difference of four points can end in only two games and a string of good results for the former
German champions can bring them back in contention for the Bundesliga crown.
The full-back admitted that Jupp Heynckes’ side have been out of touch off-late but it is just a matter of time before they return to their best. He added that there are still 11 games to play for and the race could go down to
the wire.
“FC Bayern will always be our main competitors even if they drop into 3rd or 4th in the meantime. With the squad that Bayern have at their disposal almost anything is possible for them. Even as a third or fourth
placed side they can win the last ten or eleven games in order to propel themselves towards the top of the table,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.

“However if I can continue to perform the way I have for Dortmund in the last few weeks and keep this run of form going then I see it as a huge plus point,” he concluded.
