Marcel Siem leads the second round of Irish Open
Marcel Siem smashed a two-day aggregate of 10-under-par to lead the field as the Irish Open proceeds into the weekend. The European Tour event, presented by Discover Ireland, is taking place at the par-71 Killarney Golf & Fishing Club.
Siem, who hails from Germany, stepped onto the first tee and rolled a beautiful birdie putt to set the tone of the day. He picked two more birdies later on the front nine and wrapped it with a score of 32.
The early accomplishment shot Siem straight to the top slot on the leaderboard. A slight hiccup was witnessed at the back, when the German dropped two shots on the 12th and 15th hole. Seemingly unaffected by the dropped shots though,
Siem fired two birdies and one eagle to make up for the loss. He managed to match his first round score of 66, and wrapped the day in lead.
The 31-year-old, whose best finish on the European Tour this season has been a 13th place finish in the Ballantine’s Championship, was extremely happy with his performance.
“It’s a great venue here and I love that golf course, and the crowds we had here the first two rounds is perfect,” Siem said. “If we had that every week, it would be great. One start, it’s always special, and we only have the Open and Wentworth, and it’s
good. Luckily, I have a late tee time tomorrow, so I’m okay with 8pm coming off the course.”
Siem was chased by Soren Hansen, who matched his second-round score, and Jeev Milkha Singh, who slid below the player after signing for a 70.
First-round leader, Singh failed to emulate his opening score and dropped three shots in the day. Despite that, he managed to stay in close proximity of the temporary leader.
Meanwhile, Hansen caught six birdies against a single bogey and sealed the day with a 66. The German enjoyed a perfect balance between his long and short game. As a result, he is now posing threat to Siem for the top slot on the leaderboard.
