Marcel Siem qualifies for the Open Championship by winning the French Open
Marcel Siem, the German professional golfer, won the French Open after eight years and qualified for the Open Championship. The event took place at one of the toughest golf courses in Europe, the Le Golf National.
It was a very interesting last day between Siem and Italy’s Francesco Molinari. Siem started off his day with four-under par.
He played well on the front nine, as he carded three birdies. His back nine did not go that well, as he was only able to score two birdies and a bogey.
He ended up with a four-under par for the day and his total score for the tournament was eight-under par. There were no eagles or double bogeys for Siem on the final day.
Francesco Molinari played the best round of the tournament. After the first three days, his score was only par. He carded a double bogey on the first hole, which made his score two-over par. At the time, he was six strokes behind Siem.
After the only double bogey of his tournament, Molinari displayed one of his best performances on the tour. He carded three birdies on the front nine and five birdies on the back nine. This made his total score for the tournament seven-under par.
Molinari was just one stroke behind the German golfer. He finished at the second position.
With this win, Siem stepped into the ranking of the top-60 golfers in the world and qualified for the Open Championship. He also picked up a cheque for £420,000.
Last year’s winner, Thomas Levet, after his win, was so happy that he jumped into the lake. As a result, he injured himself.
After the tournament, in an interview the 31-year-old said, “I’m just going to have some nice French champagne. It means a lot to me. So many tournaments I kind of destroyed already this year, I’m so happy I got it done in the end”.
“I was very nervous. The last stretch is one of the toughest stretches we have on tour and I made some great shots. I hit it close on 15, made a great shot on 16 and on 17 I even hit the flag. I stayed very calm. It’s all about winning in the end and now
I’m in the Open, which is unbelievable,” he added.
