Marcelino Torres to get licensed from an apprentice jockey in about a week
The twenty-three-year-old, apprentice jockey Marcelino Torres will be issued the racing license in the coming week. Being a jockey was a dream that instilled in Marcelino’s mind ever since he came to the US in 2010 from his home town, Guerrero, Mexico.
Upon reaching the States, Marcelino Torres joined his uncle at the Thoroughbred Training Center in Lexington.
It was on his second mount, Luckie Chuckie, on 11th February at Turfway Park that Marcelino Torres won for the first time. It was the fifth race on the card that the trainee of Byron Hughes ended up winning by 5 ¾ lengths on
a mile’s track. The race had attracted eight contestants.
Marcelino Torres came to United States upon the insistence of his uncle, Concepcion Torres, who is an exercise rider.
“I just kept working and working and working,” Torres said. “I’m very happy, very excited.”
His arrival in the US increased his passion for horse racing as now he was exposed to races on track, and he did not even miss them on the TV. The races inspired him further and brought him closer to his dream of becoming a jockey, than ever before.
Not only the races, but also his family was filled with examples associated with the horse racing industry. For instance, two of his younger uncles, Ernesto and Omar were occupied in galloping horses at the Training Centre, and it did not take more
than two months for Marcelino Torres to follow in their footsteps as he has been under the constant guidance of his uncle.
The about to be jockey’s first ride was on Friday, 10th February in which he finished seventh. He raced the third time on Saturday 11th February by riding in the eighth race on the card, the same day
he raced his very first horse to victory, completing the number of rides that entitle him for the license.
His uncle has been the fundamental support this far, which has been absolutely instrumental in actualizing his dream. For further guidance and advice, his uncle will again play an irreplaceable role.
If it would take him a few races to post the first licensed victory or he will be successful in the very start, would surface soon.
