Marcin Gawron outlasts Marc Sieber to enter main draw – Banja Luka 2012 CH
Qualifying top seed, Marcin Gawron, tumbled the German rising star, Marc Sieber, in straight sets at the Banja Luka Challenger 2012, an outdoor clay court event held in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He summed up a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory against the world number 446 to secure a place in the main draw on Sunday.
The seeded Pole stepped off steam in the second set but found his rhythm afterwards, eventually sealing the deal in one hour and 48 minutes. Battling each other for the first time, Gawron comfortably advanced into first round after earning this fame.
Gawron made a powerful entry at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event. He drew the first blood in the opening game to take the initial lead. The Pole then blocked all three breakpoints he came across to keep his entire serves and cashed in his second break chance in the last game, consequently clicking the opener with a 6-3 win.
The left-hander from Germany re-focused in the proceeding set. He went on a four-game tear before Gawron could hold on. Apart from losing his edge in the sixth game, Sieber pocketed the last two games and clinched the equaliser with a 6-2 score line. He failed to ward off the only breakpoint he faced and converted three out of four break chances to his advantage.
Ranked 344th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Gawron re-gained his early ascendancy in the final set. He got the desiderated break in the fourth game and jumped to a 4-1 lead. The Pole kept his remaining serves with conviction and broke Sieber’s serve again in the last game, ultimately registering a 6-2 success. He plucked his entire serves without facing any breakpoint and availed two out of three break chances.
Up next for Gawron is the Austrian challenger, Michael Linzer, in the first round.
The Ukrainian contestant, Artem Smirnov, will join the Pole in the main draw. He brushed off early resilience to outsmart Australia’s Colin Ebelthite in straight sets. The Ukrainian lost his serve once but cashed in both break chances to manipulate a 7-6(5), 6-4 success.
