Marco Antonio Barrera: Amir Khan is not yet ready for Floyd Mayweather – Boxing News
Marco Antonio Barrera, former three-weight world champion who once lost to Amir Khan, believes Khan is not yet up to the mark to take on Floyd Mayweather. According to Barrera, Khan still needs to gain more experience in order to be able to challenge some
of the best pound for pound fighters around.
Barrera is currently 38 and is a former two-time WBO Super Bantamweight, WBC, Lineal, & The Ring Featherweight and WBC & IBF Super Featherweight champion. These days, Barrera is in the UK on a tour to spend time with his friends. He will be telling his career’s
stories, take pictures with them and give them autographs. Barrera’s career has been a bumpy ride yet he has always given his best and has reached the status of being ranked among the best fighters in the world. He ranks 43 on ESPN’s 50 Greatest Boxers of
All Time.
Barrera had faced Khan in March 2009 for his WBO and WBA titles at the MEN Arena in Manchester. Barrera, unfortunately, suffered an unintentional head butt from Khan due to which he lost the fight four rounds later. In his recent interview, commenting on
his defeat to Khan, Barrera stated, “I am still very sad about what happened that night, the public deserved to see a great fight but I was head butted in the first round. Many people don’t know but I still have the pictures, there were more than 30 stitches
in the cut, and it should have been ruled a no contest. There was so much blood after that and I am still really sad, because the public didn’t get to see the fight that they all wanted to see.”
Since then, we have seen Khan going to the acme of his career while Barrera found himself at a standstill. When asked about Amir’s potential and fighting skills, Barrera said that he cannot say how great a fighter Amir Khan is since he did not get that far
with him, but he moves well. He added that hopefully, Khan will work harder and fulfil his potential and that right now Khan is still developing and to take Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather would be too soon for him since both of them are at a higher level.
As of now, news of Barrera’s retirement is in the air since there are no exciting bouts for him left in the industry.
