Marco Chiudinelli beats Arnau Brugues-Davi to clear the qualifiers – Dubai Tennis Championships 2012
Unseeded Swiss competitor, Marco Chiudinelli, continued with his brilliant run of form to make it through to the main rounds of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Sunday. He outplayed Arnau Brugues-Davi of Spain in the
straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, to clear the qualifying competition of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The 30-year-old Swiss veteran stunned the sixth seed South African, Rik De Voest, in the opening round qualifier and carried on with his winning momentum to book a berth in the main draw of the tournament. He banged in eight aces
and skilfully converted 33 out of 39 first serve points in the match. The unseeded Swiss converted three of his eight break opportunities in the contest, while his counterpart struck just one serve break in the entire matchup to finish on the losing side.
Facing a stiff resistance in the opening set, Chiudinelli kept focused to take the better of his opponent in a convincing manner. He dropped his serve in the fourth game but fought four deuces in the very next game to snatch his
serve back. The opener was on its way to the tie-breaker round but a crucial break point conversion in the 11th game changed the course of the set. Chiudinelli broke the Spanish serve to lead 6-5 and then served out of the set to lead 1-0 in the
match.
The Swiss veteran broke early in the following set to lead 3-1 and carried on with his aggressive game play to hold on to his lead. Brugues-Davi failed to reply with a break point conversion and eventually submitted the second
set at 4-6, letting Chiudinelli to the opening round of the main draw. He will face the former world number three, Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, in his first match of the main rounds.
Eighth seed Kazakh competitor, Andrey Golubev, also made it to the main draw of the Dubai Tennis Championships by registering a huge upset against the second seed Malek Jaziri of Tunisia on Sunday. He came out victorious after
a taxing battle ending in three sets, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3, to surprise everyone.
Golubev took the upper hand early in the match by clinching the opening set with ease but a ravaging comeback from Jaziri was witnessed, winning the next set with a bagel. However, the eighth seed Kazakh reigned supreme over his
opponent in the final set of the match to accompany Chiudinelli in the opening round of the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Dubai.
