Marco Chiudinelli ousts Michael Berrer in final qualifying round – Rakuten Open 2011
Following with the final qualifier round of the Rakuten Open, Tokyo, Marco Chiudinelli, the Swiss international, flared up against Michael Berrer, German world No.87, to battle it out for the main draw seat of the ATP Tour 500
event. Berrer, aged 31, got a horrific defeat as the Swiss world No.237 blistered away winning 7-6(5), 6-4, in a long two hour and three minutes match.
Despite the disparity in ranking, Chiudinelli went on staggering the higher ranked German and winning the match with much ease. Predictably, Berrer had the odds at his side, however, the upset did somewhat ruin the German hopes.
With the two walking down the blue hard court, the two contenders took their places with Chiudinelli serving for the opener. Serving out the first game of the match, the Swiss world No.237 rolled down the scoreboard, 1-0. Following
his challenger, Berrer mustered away with a win to level up the scores at 1-1.
With the serve switch back to the Swiss, the 30-year-old went ballistic as he washed away game 3 and broke the German in game 4 to lead the set, 3-1. Berrer quickly recovered as he broke back in game 5, and served out game 6 to
level the scores at 3-3.
Rallying down the scores, the two again equalled up at 4-4 and then at 5-5 before the game tied up, tiebreaker. Serving first for the decider game, the 30-year-old Swiss served first and swirled away with two easy points, 2-0.
Breaking the German every once his serve, Chiudinelli finally went off with a cheeky 7-5 win over his rival to pocket the set 7-6(5) and lead the match.
Berrer, ranked higher than his succeeding challenger, world No.87, went on to serve the next set first. Winning the first game, 1-0, the 31-year-old stood to return and lost game 2 as Chiudinelli levelled up in no time. Battling
out the next games, both won 2 games each and equalled up 3-3 before Berrer broke down again in game 7 and gave away the set.
Serving out game 8 Chiudinelli took the lead and stood just a game away from victory. Berrer did cut back the lead to 4-5, however, could not break back to save the match. The Swiss went off serving out game 10 to clinch a straight
sets win and a berth in the main draw of the Rakuten Open 2011.
