Marco Crespi shares the lead at the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final
Marco Crespi of Italy shared the lead after the first round of the European Challenge Tour’s season-ending Apulia San Domenico Grand Final, after posting an impressive seven-under par 64, on Wednesday, October 24, 2012.
The tournament is being played at the San Domenico Golf course, featuring the top-45 players in the Challenge Tour Rankings.
This is the last opportunity for the Challenge Tour professionals to earn their European Tour cards by finishing among the top-21 players in the rankings, at the end of the week.
Crespi won the Telenet Trophy earlier this season. However, he still lists 32nd in the rankings. Consequently, he desperately needs a big finish this week, in order to book a place in the 2013 European Tour season.
Two weeks ago, he finished tied for the 10th position at the D+D Real Czech Challenge Open. Entering the second round of the Grand Final, he is moving right on track and is likely to maintain his good form in the remaining rounds.
The Italian started off his first round campaign with a bogey on the first hole. Thereafter, he birdied six of the next eight holes and reached the turn with a five-under par score.
The back nine also witnessed him play some well-calculated strokes, as he added another two shots to his scorecard, without conceding a single bogey.
At the end of the day, he found himself tied for the first position with Frenchman Michael Lorenzo-Vera, who carded eight birdies and an eagle against three bogeys for a 64.
“I played great from tee to green,” said Crespi. “My putting on the front nine was perfect. I holed a very long putt at the eighth - about 15 metres”.
He continued, “I really enjoyed the day. There are a couple of very long holes and that is good for me. You just have to keep the ball on the fairway and play for the pins”.
He added, “With a good result here I can definitely climb up there. For the rest of the week I just have to try to keep it the same and play it shot by shot and then we will see what happens”.
