Marco Crespi wins at home at the Mugello Tuscany Open – Golf news
Marco Crespi birdied four of the last six holes on day four of the Mugello Tuscany Open to claim his second European Challenge Tour victory by a single stroke, on Sunday, July 21, 2013.
The tournament was being staged at the UNA Poggio dei Medici Golf Club, featuring some of the best Challenge Tour players from different parts of the world.
Crespi, who was trailing the overnight leader Knut Borsheim of Norway by four strokes entering the final round, thrilled his home crowd with a stunning show on day four, and finish one stroke ahead of Borsheim and José-Felipe Lima of Spain.
He birdied two of the first three holes, followed by nine straight par putts. Entering the last 13th hole, he as two-under for the round, and was still three strokes behind Lima.
That was the time when he picked up pace and made a strong charge to surge to the top of the leaderboard by carding four birdies over the next six holes.
Talking to the European Challenge Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in recording a victory in from of the Italian fans and expressed his wish to continue the same in other parts of the world.
“It was perfect to win on home soil,” he said. “I had so much support and everyone really enjoyed it.”
“I knew I had to make birdie on the last two holes to have any chance but thought maybe for second and then Knut made a few mistakes,” he added.
According to Crespi, his control over his long game was the main reason behind his success in the event. He revealed that he had been focusing on his game off the tee for the last few weeks and the hard work finally paid him off in Italy.
“My long game has always been good but the last three weeks has been amazing. I missed a few putts around the turn but the putt on the 13th really got me going. Now I am looking forward to celebrating,” said the 34 year old, whose previous success came in last year’s Telenet Trophy.
