Marco Di Carli defeats Paul Biedermann in 100m freestyle – German World Championships Selection Trial
Marco Di Carli defeated the national record holder, Paul Biedermann, in the Men’s 100m freestyle final and improved the national record on fifth day of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The championship is a selection trial, where SG Frankfurt’s Di Carli confirmed his spot in the German swimming team, to compete at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, taking place this July.
The Frankfurt swimmer won the 100m freestyle gold medal by recording an incredible effort of 48.24 seconds. He was followed by former national champion, Biedermann, who remained 0.42 seconds slower than Marco and touched the wall for silver medal in 48.66
seconds. Hamburger SC’s Markus Deibler followed them on the finishing wall for the bronze medal, posting a time of 49.11 seconds.
Marco improved the national record, by improving the previous mark of 48.39 seconds, held by Paul at the 2009 European Long Course Championships in Berlin.
The German champion was 1.32 seconds slower than Cesar Cielo’s World mark of 46.91 seconds, made at the 2009 Rome World Championships. His timing was 1.12 seconds above the European mark of 47.12 seconds, owned by Alain Bernard at the same world Championships.
The champion was a clear favourite for the gold medal from the start of the race, where he completed his first lap with a magnificent timing of 23.00 seconds. He was followed by Deibler, who finished his initial 50 metres, clocking a time of 23.12 seconds.
Paul completed his initial lap in the third fastest place, producing a time of 23.72 seconds.
The national champion sprinted his way to the finishing wall, completing his swim in 28.24 seconds to earn the gold spot on the podium. Paul overwhelmed Deibler’s effort in the second lap, to settle on the podium for the silver medal.  Markus was only 0.04
seconds away from his fellow swimmer, Christoph Fildebrandt, who completed his lap in a time of 49.15 seconds.
Marco was extremely happy with his national title and expressed that he will try to make a splash at the upcoming world titles.
