Marco Fernandez and Robert Patterson make their way into Round 4 of ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic
Brazil’s Marco Fernandez and Hawaii’s Robert Patterson walked away with top honours from their respective Round 3 (Round of 96) heats of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic that continued at the Huntington Beach Pier in
California, America, on Thursday, March 29.
Both Fernandez and Patterson got added to the Round 4 (Round of 64) line-up following their success in their Round 3 heats. America’s Jack Harris and his fellow countryman Nils Schweizer advanced through into the next round as well after getting hold of
runner-up place in the seventh and eighth heat respectively.
The local and international surfing talent were forced to continue their battles for survival in demanding surfing conditions once again. The medium-sized waves seemed very promising, but the low frequency of scoring opportunities made it quite difficult
for them to feel confident during the course of the four-man battle.
The seventh heat turned out to be a low-scoring contest as all four surfers had little luck with the waves. However, Fernandez managed to step up to post a 6.17 on the score-board off his first business-wave and soon backed it up with a 4.60-point wave to
finish with a heat-total of 10.77 points. The score turned out to be enough to seal the deal for him.
Harris successfully extended his life in the competition as well after securing runner-up place with a heat-total of 10.10 points, which comprised of a 5.67 and 4.43-point wave.
Hawaii’s Love Hodel and America’s Derek Peters finished with a heat-total of 8.73 and 6.20 points respectively, consequently getting removed from the contention for the event title.
The eighth heat of Round 3 pitted Patterson against three American surfers, namely Schweizer, Taylor Thorne and Hunter Lysaught.
The Hawaiian surfer got off to a modest start, struggling to find a good score, but managed to find a 4.27 and 7.60-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 11.87 points. The score remained unbeatable and consequently put him in first place.
Schweizer finished behind Patterson in second place after scoring a 6.33 and 4.47 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 10.80 points.
Thorne and Lysaught were unable to make it into the next round after rounding out the bottom-two positions with a two-wave total of 10.57 and 10.53 points respectively.
