Marco Fu leads Martin Gould 6-3 in the opening session – 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship
Marco Fu has ended the opening session with a 6-3 lead over Martin Gould in the first round of the 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship, which is being held at the Crucible Theatre,
Sheffield, England.
It looked as if the Hong Kong’s professional, Fu, was taking revenge from his opponent for his last year’s defeat, where Gould beat him 10-9 in the last-32. It was a magnificent play presented
by the world number twenty-one, Fu, as he showcased magnificent breaks of 70, 97, 81, 63, 115 and 56. However the overall score-line between both players was 62-73, 68-34, 0-68, 64-55, and 133-1, 42-76, 74-10, 73-23 and 117-0.
Thirty-three-year-old, Fu, dominated the first frame with a superb break of 70 to have the first blood 1-0. In the second frame a few chances were exchanged before Fu again mopped up a
classy frame-winning break of 97 to led 2-0. The Pinner Potter, Gould, also showed his break building skills in the third, as he responded with a carving break of 80 to reduce the deficit by 2-1. However, his confidence was again shuttered badly in the following
fourth and fifth, as the Hong Kong Fuey showed no reeling effects and fired excellent breaks of 81 and 63 respectively to lead 4-1.
Sixth and seventh frame were cagey. A bout of safety play was seen among both players, however this time it was Gould, who came on the top to come within one frame by 4-3.
It looked as if now maybe Fu is going to slow down, but everyone was left flabbergasted when the Masters runner-up racked up a mind-boggling match-highest century break of 115 in the eighth
frame followed by another decisive break of 56 in the ninth to end his campaign with a 6-3 lead.
Marco Fu and Martin Gould will start off with the second session of their match today, however, Gould will have to produce something extra-ordinary to secure his place in the next round,
as his opponent needs only three more frames now to seal his victory.
