Marco Huck: I will stay at cruiserweight division to beat every opponent – Boxing news
Marco Huck, the current WBO cruiserweight champion, after careful deliberations with his teammates, recently announced to stay at the cruiserweight division and continue his long, intimidating reign by pummelling each and every opponent in his division.
Huck, the German number one cruiserweight, recently took a huge leap and challenged Alexander Povetkin to defend his WBA heavyweight gold against him. The bout was held on February 25, 2012 and Marco, though was unable to beat the Russian number one heavyweight
yet collected much respect from the 32-year-old.
Marco lost the bout by an inch and collected scores of 114-114, 113-116, and 112-116. The whole crowd and the boxing fanatics all around the world praised the iron heart of the Berliner by giving him a standing ovation. After the bout, many analysts said
that it was a big rather uneasy spring for the 27-year-old Huck since he lacks the requisite experience and is too young to brawl heavyweights.
After the bout the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) gave Marco a 10-day time limit to decide whether he wants to anew his career as a heavyweight or desires to continue his rule over the cruiserweight.
If Marco had decided to stay at the heavyweight class, he would have been ordered by the WBO to forfeit the cruiserweight title, the gold he has defended successfully against whopping eight pugilists.
Huck, also known as Kapt’n Huck, underwent many discussion sessions with his trainer Ulli Wegner, his promoter Wilfried Sauerland and even shared views about the matter with Chris Meyer and Hagen Doering, general manager and sports director Sauerland Event
respectively.
After detailed deliberations, Marco Huck, the cruiserweight champion, finally announced, “I would have loved to remain at heavyweight but my team convinced me to stay at cruiserweight for the time being. That’s fine for me. I am happy to continue my domination
and keep destroying opponents. I will start with Afolabi. He is a dangerous fighter but he has no chance against me.”
Huck did not put forth the reasons which convinced him to stay at cruiserweight but most probably the answer laid in Sauerland’s comment.
Wilfried remarked, “We believe that defending his WBO cruiserweight title is the best thing for Marco to do. At the age of 27 he is still very young for a boxer. He can always move up to heavyweight later.”
Marco is currently recuperating from possible Povetkin-bout injuries and will soon initiate sparring since Sauerland Event have already contacted Ola Afolabi’s handler Tom Loeffler for the finalisation of the bout deal. Ola, infamous as the Kryptonite, is
a Briton who has collected 17 wins out of a total 22 skirmishes and is also the former WBO cruiserweight champion. He lost his gold to Marco in 2009 via unanimous decision.
