Marco Koch earns Men's 200m breast-stroke final: Day four – 2011 German SC Nationals
Marco Koch of DSW 1912 Darmstadt earned gold medal of Men's 200m breast-stroke on day four of 2011 German Short Course Nationals on Sunday, November 27 in Wuppertal.
The 21-year-old Koch dictated terms to his competitors from the start of the race, where he completed his first round in a time of 29.16 seconds. He was trailed by Maximilian Kraus of SV Halle, who covered the same distance in a second fastest time of 29.42 seconds. Christian Vom Lehn of SG Bayer Wup remained third fastest swimmer in the first round as he clocked a time of 30.17 seconds.
Koch continued his dominance in the second round, where he sustained his fastest spot by completing his first half of the race in a time of 1 minute and 00.79 seconds.
The 18-year-old Kraus followed his lead in the second round as he remained 1.79 seconds behind him and ended his second round in a time of 1 minute and 02.58 seconds. The 19-year-old Vom Lehn was 0.84 seconds slower than Kraus and covered the equivalent distance in a time of 1 minute and 03.42 seconds.
The stats remained the same in the third round, where Koch posted a fastest time of 1 minute and 33.36 seconds. He was followed by Kraus, who remained nearly three seconds behind and ended his third round with an effort of 1 minute and 36.06 seconds. Vom Lehn remained third fastest swimmer of the race by concluding his round in a time of 1 minute and 37.07 seconds.
Koch accelerated his efforts in the final round where he extended lead over his competitors and produced the time of 2 minutes and 05.76 seconds.
The crowd witnessed a laudable effort of Vom Lehn in the final round, where he edged out Kraus with a difference of 0.24 seconds, clocking a time of 2 minutes and 10.11 seconds for silver medal. Kraus hit the finishing wall with a third fastest timing of 2 minutes and 10.35 seconds.
Koch was overjoyed with his gold winning effort in the 200m discipline and aroused the expectations of his fans by articulating his desire of continuing the same in his future endeavours.
