Marco Koch overpowers Giulio Zorzi in Men’s 50m breast-stroke: Day one – FINA Swimming World Cup
Key German breast-stroke swimmer, Marco Koch elevated his name among the giants of swimming as he defeated Giulio Zorzi of South Africa in Men’s 50m breast-stroke playoff on the initial day of the 2011 Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) Swimming
World Cup. The event is a short course competition, while its session concluded on Friday, October 7, in Dubai.
The 21-year-old Koch showed his urgency towards the finishing wall by edging out his competitors for the title of double lap breast-stroke event. With his finest qualification efforts in the first round of 50m swim, Koch became the arena’s favourite for
the title of event.
The German grappled gold medal of the event and proved his eligibility for the crown by clocking a time of 27.51 seconds. He remained 2.26 seconds away from improving the World Cup mark of 25.25 seconds, set by South Africa’s Cameron Van Den Burgh in 2009.
With his immaculate effort, he sustained his fastest qualification spot and was able to meet the expectations of his fans, which were eager to see him dominate the event. Koch experienced stiff competition from South African swimmer, Zorzi, who was just
a nail away from him and earned silver medal of the event by submitting a time of 27.64 seconds.
Zorzi qualified as the third fastest swimmer into the final behind USA’s Nelson Westby, who failed to answer his challenging swim in the last race. Westby remained in a strong position in the first-lap of the race but Zorzi elevated his swim in the final
lap of the race, staying clearly ahead of him.
The American stayed 0.26 seconds behind his former finisher, following his lead on the podium for bronze medal with a timing of 27.90 seconds.
Marco’s intellectual effort in the short distance event was highly appreciated by the arena, while the podium finishers received their awards and accolades after the session. The competition is expected to get stronger at the next stop of World Cup series
in Stockholm, as more swimmers will take part in the event.
