Marco Marcato has perfect day for Vacansoleil-DCM after taking Tour de Vendee 2011 – Cycling Update
Vacansoleil-DCM team’s Marco Marcato finished safely in the front group to take the Hors Category one-day-race at Tour de Vendee 2011 on Sunday, October 2.
The race started in Le Poiré Sur Vie and finished in La Roche Sur Yon. The 27-year-old Italian cyclists proved the quickest and most attentive in the final kilometres as he covered the distance of 205 kilometres in 4 hours, 47 minutes and 33 seconds.
The race was held in the same place as the Tour de France. Thousands of French cycling fans were excited for Europcar team and specially Pierre Rolland and Thomas Voeckler for their achievements in the grand tour. However, Marco put in an outstanding performance
and spoiled the hopes of the Europcar fans.
In the race, the group of 15 cyclists made numerous attacks throughout the competition. In the final kilometers, the group of five cyclists made a breakaway lead including, Marco Marcato, Pello Bilbao Lopez De Armentia (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Maxime Bouet (AG2R),
Laurent Pichon (Bretagne) and Levarlet (Fra) Saur-Sojasun.
They gained an advantage of a few seconds over the other cyclists, while Pichon launched an attack with Levarlet but failed to catch the trio. Bouet and Pello Bilbao worked hard together but Marco increased his pace and managed to build a gap to take the
victory.
Recently, Marcato took the overall runner-up spot in Etoile de Besseges and sixth place in Dwars door Vlaanderen. He also secured overall third place in Tour de Pologne.
Anthony Charteau (Team Europcar) was in good form but after a few kilometres, he failed to hold his pace and grabbed sixth place with a difference of four seconds, ahead of his team-mate Perrig Quemeneur.
Evert Verbist (Veranda's Willems-Accent), Inaki Isasi Flores (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Reinier Honig (Landbouwkrediet) were in eighth, ninth and tenth place respectively.
Unexpectedly, the official website has just revealed the result of 14 riders. Consequently, schedule for the French Cup of the season has not been finalised. However, Tony Gallopin was confirmed the winner of the Individual ranking ahead of Feillu.
