Marco Scutaro shines against St. Louis Cardinals despite hurting left hip - MLB Update
Second baseman Marco Scutaro suffered an injury in the first inning when St. Louis Cardinals’ left fielder Matt Holliday jumped onto his legs while trying to break up the double play.
Interestingly, that injury did not disallow him to cause offensive damage to the Cardinals later on. He was part of the run-rampage experienced by the San Francisco Giants in the fourth inning, which then paved the way for their victory.
However, after Scutaro struck two hits in three at-bats, he left the field, because he was unable to get rid of the pain. It remains to be seen whether he can play the upcoming matches or not. If he stays out, it will be a serious blow to the Giants.
Giants at the moment are all set to dominate the Cardinals and keep them from winning the National League Championship Series.
They have turned the momentum on their side by routing the Cardinals on Monday. They will be looking to maintain the status quo and record wins from now onward.
They cannot afford to take the Cardinals for granted as the latter are known for stunning any opposition. Giants will be aware of how the Washington Nationals were deprived of the win in the last match of the NLDS by them.
In light of this, it can be expected that the Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy plans for the upcoming contests in the series and devises strategies to keep the Cardinals at-bay.
At the same time, Bochy will be making a decision about the replacement of Scutaro if he does not recover in time.
Holliday has clarified that he did not intend to harm Scutaro and that only purpose in his mind was to stop the double play from happening. Nonetheless, he has admitted that he should have made a jump onto second base a bit earlier.
"In hindsight, I wish I would have started the slide a little earlier, but it happened so fast," Holliday said. "I hope he's OK, he's a good guy. I was more interested in breaking up the double play."
Giants’ fans will be hoping that the injury to Scutaro is not serious and that he returns in the line-up soon.
