The Portuguese Primeira Liga has been hit with controversy recently. Racism has surfaced in the relatively peaceful league and it has been heavily criticized by players, officials and fans alike.
Benfica’s Javi Garcia is thought to be the guilty party in this one, as he supposedly made negative comments to SC Braga captain Alan during their Liga Sagres fixture on the 6th of November.
During the crucial tie, the Archbishops skipper claimed that the Spaniard used abusive language on him and also made racist comments.
While the Eagles’ midfielder has denied all allegations, an inquiry is likely to be opened so that the full details of the incident can be known and appropriate actions can be taken against the guilty party.
However ex-Benfica defender, Marco Zoro, has defended his old teammate against the reports and claimed that the former Real Madrid man was quite kind to him during their days at Estadio da Luz and showed no signs that he could commit such a hideous act.
Speaking to reporters, the former Messina man said that he quite surprised with what he was hearing and insisted that Garcia had impeccable behaviour and never offended him in any way.
"I am not aware of this story, but I'm amazed to hear that Javi Garcia made racist insults. When I was at Benfica, he behaved very well with me every day. He was really exceptional to me. At the time, I was not playing and therefore did not have any sponsor
but he asked http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Adidas-c38219 give me boots.”
“If he were racist, he would not have behaved well with me. But I was not in Braga, so I do not know what he said, but they don’t know the man, “Marco Zoro was quoted as saying.
While Marco Zoro has defended his former colleague from the racist comments, the fact remains that if the allegations are proven, Javi Garcia could suffer a hefty fine, while Alan faces a three-match ban if he is found to have lied.
