Marcos Baghdatis, Jamie Baker advance to the second round – AEGON International 2012
Marcos Baghdatis beats Pablo Andujar 6-1, 6-1
Former world number eight, Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, scored a pretty one-sided win over Spain’s Pablo Andujar, seeded eighth in the draw, in the first round at the AEGON International in Eastbourne, England on Monday. Baghdatis
took just 49 minutes to thrash the Spaniard in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 and got through to the last 16.
The Cypriot took lead from the very beginning of the match, capturing opening three games to go up 3-0. Andujar held the fourth one to reduce the trail to 1-3 but Baghdatis grabbed three more in a row later on to close it 6-1.
The story of the second set was not much different from the opener, as Baghdatis allowed the Spaniard to win only one game till the end, breaking him three times and holding all of his own serves to grab it 6-1.
The Cypriot will take on either Belgium’s Steve Darcis or Matthew Ebden of Australia in the second round.
Jamie Baker defeats Donald Young 6-1, 6-4
World number 200, Jamie Baker of Great Britain, produced an upset victory, as he stunned the 50th ranked, Donald Young, in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to reach the second round.
Young drew the first blood, as he snatched a break in the opening game of the contest to move ahead but the American failed to win even a single one afterwards, getting broken three times and losing six consecutively to go down
1-6.
Baker struck in the very first game of the second set and held his next serve to attain a 2-0 lead. Young bounced back in style, as he did not take much time to square off the proceedings at 2-2. However, the Brit broke the American
again in the following game and this time he made the most of it to win 6-4.
Talking to the reporters after the match, Baker said, "It was good. Maybe a little bit of expectation on myself to, if not to win, but to play to a kind of similar level to last week. Although I lost 3 and 2 to Tsonga, I thought
I actually - if you look at my level - I thought I played pretty well. He's obviously in a different class. I think I had a lot to build on from that."
The British player will face the seventh seed, Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, or Japan’s Go Soeda for a place in the last eight at this tournament.
