Marcos Baghdatis confirms participation for Apia International Sydney 2012 – Tennis News
Marcos Baghdatis confirmed his participation in Apia Sydney International yesterday. They would join the local hero and tournament’s brand ambassador, Lleyton Hewitt. The event will be contested at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre
from January 8th to 14th.
Baghdatis is the former champion of Sydney international tournament and looks to double his tally by winning this year. He said “I won the event two years ago so I am just excited to go back there and feel the heat, get in some
good matches and have some fun with the crowd”. Baghdatis have always loved playing in Sydney and reckons it as one of his favourite cities. Fans in Sydney love Tennis and they have the flare for this support. Cypriot crowd is supporting Baghdatis to bring
home glory by winning the title this year.
Cypriot International and current world number 55 is all fired up to win the Sydney title this year and appreciated the local crowd who has always been respectful and relaxed in all circumstances giving him strength and courage
to perform his level best.
Event Director, Craig Watson, was delighted with the former champions return news and praised the support and non-stop entertainment he has provided for the Sydney crowd that has enabled the organisers to surmount large turnover
and accumulate profitable returns from the tournaments. This year inclusion of the former champion will again appeal the crowd to move into the Sydney Olympic Tennis Park to observe some of the best tennis encounters. Watson said “I know Marcos was bitterly
disappointed that he was unable to defend his title in 2011 because of injury so I expect him to be really determined when he arrives in Australia early in the New Year. He has been in great form recently, having made the final in Kuala Lumpur, so he will
certainly be a good chance to win his fifth career title in January.”
2010 was one of the most successful years for World number 55 who became the only player to beat the Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal when they were world no. 1. He commenced the 2010 Sydney International in an exciting manner beating
Nick Lindhal in straight sets and then continued his journey to clinch the Sydney Title for the first time. During his run in Sydney tournament he defeated the sixth and fourth seeded Viktor Troicki and Lleyton Hewitt. Mardy Fish and Richard Gasquet were his
victims in the semi-final and final respectively.
Cypriot International was disappointed that he couldn’t contested in this year’s Sydney International and was unable to defended his title due to groin injury that just happened four days before the tournament. He had his family
in Sydney at that time and was really thrilled to participate in Sydney 2011 and play in front of them but then sometimes one has to take such difficult decisions in those hopeless situations.
Tournament director has 20 more players on his radar and is planning to make some interesting announcements in coming weeks.
