Marcos Baghdatis slays Denis Gremelmayr in the quarter-final – UNICEF Open 2011
Second seed, Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, displayed his tremendous tennis abilities once more to blow away the German opponent, Denis Gremelmayr in the quarter-final draws of the UNICEF Open on Friday.
Being played at the Autotron Park in Rosmalen, near 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, the Cypriot wildcard entrant devastated Gremelmayr in straight sets 6-1, 6-0, to book a berth in the semi-final of the ATP (Association of Tennis
Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament.
The one-sided contest didn’t even last for an hour, with the German surrendering in the 48th minute of play to let Baghdatis away with victory and a place in the semis of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
World Tour 250 tournament. Gremelmayr appeared in no sort of form throughout the matchup and held serve only once in the 13 games being played.
The aggressive Cypriot took the reins of the match right from the start and then orchestrated most of the rallies in the match to take down his opponent in the most assertive manner. Baghdatis broke the German six out of 14 times
and successfully defended the only two break points he faced from his opponent.
It is the third consecutive time that Baghdatis has defeated Gremelmayr in a singles matchup to lead the all-time head-to-head series by 3-0. He inflicted two defeats to the German way back in 2006 and repeated the similar feat
in Friday’s contest.
Baghdatis reeled off 90 percent firs serve points in the contest and was brilliant with his return game as well. He broke Gremelmayr in the very first game of the contest and then inflicted two more serve breaks to seal the opening
set at 6-1.
Cypriot domination continued in the following set as well, with Baghdatis breaking Gremelmayr in his every serve game. He eventually concluded victory in the most authoritative manner at 6-0, moving into the semi-final draws of
the UNICEF Open.
Baghdatis will take on the fourth seed Ivan Dodig of Croatia in the semi-final to make get a title shot in the final of the tournament. Dodig was victorious against the Russian competitor, Teymuraz Gabashvili in the quarter-final,
when he defeated him in a three-setter, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
