Marcos Giron battles past Matias Sborowitz into the second round of the Boys’ Singles – French Open 2011
Marcos Giron of the United States took off the French Open campaign by registering his first victory in the Boys’ singles category, beating Matias Sborowitz of Chile on Sunday. In the contest being played in Paris, France, the
American competitor wrapped up the three-set thriller at 4-6, 6-4, 8-6, taking two hours and seven minutes to advance to the second round of the Grand Slam tournament.
The back-and-forth competition exhibited a brilliant display of tennis skills from both young players. Sborowitz drew first blood in the game, clinching the opening set with ease to get one up in the game. The Chilean slumped as
the game progressed and keep spilling errors to fritter away the early advantage he got by winning the opener.
The American bounced back very strongly in the following set to level the contest at one-all and then carried on with his winning momentum in the final set as well. A nail biting contest was observed in the third set, which was
stretched to a total of 14 games before Giron finally broke his opponent to seal victory at 8-6.
Giron had a sloppy start to the contest but recovered very well to gather pace in the later stages of the contest. The American’s serve reached just 59 per cent accuracy in the game, with Giron firing three aces and conceding four
double faults en route to victory.
Both players had 11 break chances each in the contest, with Sborowitz availing three and Giron cashing in four opportunities to take the better of his opponent. Sborowitz was very impressive with his first serve, which amazingly
reached 83 per precision and he reeled off 60 out of 89 points on it, still finishing on the losing end.
The Chilean required just one serve break to bag the opener at 6-4, to get early advantage in the competition. Sborowitz failed to sustain momentum in the following set, letting Giron back in the game and levelled the contest with
one set a piece.
With the contest evenly poised at 1-1, the decisive set was sure to be a thriller and it actually was. Both competitors held their serve until Giron finally broke in the 13th game to seal victory at 8-6, after a stiff
contest in the third set. The American will now take on the Japanese competitor, Kaichi Uchida in the second round draws of the French Open. Uchida surprised the 15th seed Australian, Luke Saville, in the opening round of the tournament.
