Marcos Giron stands tall against Enzo Couacaud in the opening round of Boys’ Singles – US Open 2011
Local competitor, Marcos Giron, edged past Enzo Couacaud of France to clear the opening round of the Boys’ Singles of the Us Open championships on Monday afternoon.
The American took one hour and twenty three minutes of play to wrap up a hard-fought straight sets victory at 7-6(1), 6-4, to reach the second round of the last Grand Slam tournament of the running ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season.
The contest was staged on the Court 7 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with the crowd fully backing up the local teenager. Giron displayed his brilliant hard-court tennis skills to take down the aggressive Frenchman in straight sets to cheer his home crowd on his victory.
The contest remained evenly poised throughout, with some intense tennis being played by the two contestants. Giron delivered his serve with 65 per cent precision and secured 27 out of 46 first serve points to take the better of his opponent in the two sets. Couacaud fired seven aces in the match but registered just three out of four serve breaks, while Giron nailed four out of his eight break opportunities to come out as the winner.
The opener took off with an early trade of serve breaks from both contestants to reach 2-2, followed by a regular game. Both players held their serve in the rest of the games and took the scores to 6-6, enforcing a tie breaker round into play. Couacaud seemed to have lost all his steam in the decider and coughed a number of silly mistakes to let the American take the advantage of it. He collected just one point in the entire tie breaker round, while Giron raced through the tie breaker round to bag the opening set at 7-6(1).
Couacaud replied strongly in the following set, breaking the American serve in the third game, but only to be broken in the very next game to fall back on even terms. Giron went on to nail two more serve breaks in the second set to bag victory at 6-4, driving Couacaud out of the competition with ease. The American advanced to the next round of the US Open to face the top seed Czech contestant, Jiri Vesely, for a place in the third round of the Grand Slam. Vesely took down Vladyslav Manafov of Ukraine in the opening round to meet Giron.
