Marcus Burghardt believes Cadel Evans will win the Tour de France 2012
The 28-year old German cycling star, Marcus Burghardt believes that his teammate Cadel Evans can repeat his Tour de France performance in the coming season. Burghardt joined BMC Racing Team in 2010 and it will be his third consecutive year with the team.
Both, Cadel Evans and Burghardt, will represent Team BMC in the 2012 season. Burghardt believes that the defending champion has very strong chances to win the 2012 Tour de France.
The cyclists will have to cover as much as 100 kilometres of time trialling distance in the coming edition of the Tour de France. Marcus believed that the long time trialling distance will favour Cadel Evans as sprinting is one of his strengths.
Burghardt told RadsportNews.com, “The two long time trials are surely advantageous for Cadel, and as defending champion, he will be one of the top favourites anyway. But with 3500 kilometres, you never know what might happen. Anything can happen suddenly,
as we saw this year with Contador. You need a team which stands together behind you. We have that this year”.
Marcus is a specialised domestique but he is also recognised as a Classic specialist and has secured many wins throughout his career.
He won the points classification, stage 5 and stage 7 at the Tour de Suisse 2010 along with a 5th overall finish at the Tour of Qatar 2010.
He could not perform up to his calibre in the current season as he was not in the best of his forms. Considering his ill-equipped standing, Marcus focused as a domestique throughout the 2011 season. However, he is positive to assert his dominance in the
coming season.
He said, “The Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Harelbeke and Gent-Wevelgem will be my season highlights. Those are all hard races and I will get the needed race kilometres”.
The cyclist will start the new season with the Tour Down Under, Tour of the Algarve and Paris-Nice.
It will be harder for Burghardt to prove himself in the tough BMC squad for the coming season as he will face competition from Philippe Gilbert and Thor Hushovd from within the team. Despite the challenge, Marcus has shown inclination to participate in the
2012 Spring Classics.
