Marcus Camby escapes jail time for possession of Marijuana – NBA Update
The marijuana possession allegations against Portland Trail Blazers center Marcus Camby have been dismissed by Brazoria County (Texas) district attorney’s office and his police record has been cleansed too.
On 22nd September, Camby was arrested and charged for illegal possession of marijuana in a no-drug zone. The Porsche, Camby was driving that night was stopped at a signal for traffic violation. During a regular car search, an officer identified the smell of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and looking thoroughly, police found almost two ounces of the drug inside his car.
Camby was accompanied by Kendal Johnson in the car and both were arrested at the spot. However Johnson accepted the blame for the possession, Marcus has been cleared of any misdeed. His attorney Randal Novak had earlier totally denied the allegation saying “For the record, Marcus Camby did not get charged with a crime and Marcus Camby did not possess any marijuana”
Earlier this year, the state of Connecticut legalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana for private use by adults. Possession of up to one-half ounce is punishable by a fine but if it exceeds this limit, jail is a possibility too. Since the amount that was found in Camby’s car was below the arrest limit, Johnson, who is Camby’s cousin was charged with Class B Misdemeanor and freed after paying a $1,500 fine.
The case would have become complicated had Johnson not confessed in the court.
“The county district attorney weighed the evidence, weighed the fact that the marijuana was under Kendal’s seat ... and weighed the fact that Kendal is confessing to his marijuana. With those facts together, they don’t have a case.” Novak said.
If proven guilty, Camby could have faced up to a year in jail along with a $4,000 fine. This is not the first drug related incident that Camby has been involved in. He was arrested back in 1997 for the same offense, but also escaped jail time back then.
