Marcus Camby still attracting attention in free agency at 38 – NBA News
At 38, Marcus Camby is still a valuable addition to any NBA team. The 16 year veteran of the NBA still has many things he can bring to the table. He is 6 foot 11, has great shot blocking abilities and can play on both ends of the floor. This past season,
he was traded by the Portland Trail Blazers to the Houston Rockets.
Although he struggled in Portland, averaging only 3.8 points along with his 8.8 rebounds, he had a good 19 games with Houston of which he started in 13. Camby averaged 7.1 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks with the Rockets which are valuable numbers for
a role player or a reserve. And teams in the NBA know his value in the league.
Camby is reported to be receiving interest from the Miami Heat and New York Knicks among other teams. Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle tweeted:
“Rockets center Marcus Camby to meet with Heat on Saturday, source said. Knicks next. Rockets unlikely, and not until after Asik decision.”
Camby is looking to play for a championship contending team and also wants to get paid, difficult in normal circumstances but a possibility in his case since at his age, the most he will be looking for is a mid level exception. He is not interested in a
veteran’s minimum deal, and wants the $3 million mini mid-level exception at least.
The Miami Heat are not sure if they will be able to sign him after they reached an agreement with free agent Ray Allen for $3 million a year. The New York Knicks also have their mid level exception to shop around with, and Camby could be a good addition
in the team as a reserve to center Tyson Chandler. Dallas Mavericks and the San Antonio Spurs are also said to be interested in the veteran.
Camby now has to make a decision as to where he would like to play for the upcoming season. With more than one team working to sign him, he is likely to land the mini mid level exception of $3 million. Miami is probably out of the race after they used their
mid level exception to recruit Ray Allen. It will all come down to who has the better offer at the end of the day.
