Marcus Campbell claims Euro Players Tour Championship
Marcus Campbell believes that his win at the Euro Players Tour Championship in Russelsheim, Germany was down to playing against some of Scotland’s best players.
Campbell secured the title with a 4-0 drubbing over China’s Liang Wenbo in a best-of-seven frames match.
The Scottish player said, "I never missed much and I shut him out. It was the same for me throughout, I was just steady and didn't make many mistakes.”
"I knew these events were winnable, but to do it is a different matter," he added.
The 38-year-old has spent a number of years struggling with his game, but he has now reached the top 32 in the rankings for the first time in his career.
In 1998, Campbell achieved a career highlight by knocking the seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry out of the UK Championship.
However, since then Campbell has struggled and dropped out of the top 50. Despite this the Scotsman never considered giving up the game.
"I always kept the faith. I've always practised hard, and sometimes you get the rewards and sometimes you don't," he said.
The turn-around has come late in his career, but the player believes that competing with the best has allowed him to develop his game. The Scotsman has played a number of the world’s best players regularly during practice sessions and this has brought Campbell
on to the next level.
Campbell said, “Two years ago, I switched clubs and started playing with the likes of Stephen Maguire, John Higgins and Graeme Dott."
"And that has made a big difference. Since then, I've got the rewards," he added.
Campbell has played superbly on the circuit this season and the Scotsman was given a cheque worth £8,750.
The win comes on the back of last week’s semi-final loss in the Players Tour Championship 6 and these two competitions have allowed Campbell to achieve the best results in his career.
