Marcus Davis planning to cut down weight class before retirement

One of the Ultimate Fighting Championships’ most dependable and experienced welterweights is getting set to cut down to the lightweight division for his next fight.

Marcus 'The Irish Hand Grenade' Davis suffered a loss in front of his home crowd at UFC 118 to Nate Diaz in August, and said the 170lb division doesn’t suit him anymore, and that he’ll want to fight a
couple more fights at the 155lb lightweight division before retiring.

"I'm going to finish out my career at 155 and try to entertain some people along the way before my old a*s retires. I like the opportunities that present themselves."

The 37-year-old is 9-5 in the UFC and 17-7 in his career over all, meaning that, at 14 fights, he’s one of the longest serving welterweights in the UFC. But he said he’s simply too short and has too small
reach to compete the other fighters in the division. That was apparent in his fight to Diaz, in which opponent used his longer reach to batter him from the outside.

"I think the UFC has me at a 70 (inch reach), and I think they do that because they feel bad for me. My reach is 69 (inches). That's got to be the worst reach at 170. Every fight that I've had in the past
year and a half, I think the closest (opponent) to my reach has been six inches longer than my reach."

Having decided to put on a few fan-friendly fights rather than make a serious run at the title shot, Davis told mmajunkie.com he was looking to fight Dennis Siver, Spencer Fisher or Sam Stout.

Those are all stand-up fighters, which would appeal to the former pro boxer, giving fans a striking battle to watch and provide Davis with a few fan-friendly fights to end his career.
