Philippines’ Smart Gilas – Syria Al Jalaa
The third quarterfinal of the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship Cup showcased an electrifying battle between Smart Gilas of Philippines and the Syrian Champions Al Jalaa. After a slow start, the hosts recovered in the second half of
the game and squeaked past Al Jalaa with a thrilling 85-80 victory. The top performers of the game are discussed as follows.
Marcus Douthit
The 6 ft 11 in forward-centre Marcus Douthit finished off with a brilliant double-double to spearhead the Smart Gilas of Philippines for an electrifying victory. The big man racked up a game-high 26 points and clutched 12 boards
to power the team down the stretch for an exciting comeback.
Almost all of the scoring for Douthit came from the field where his brilliance was absolutely invincible. The influential player connected 12 shots out of 19 field goal attempts and the remaining two points came from the charity
strip.
Marcus also clogged up 2 crucial shots which could have turned the game into a different zone if they were not blocked.
Samaki Walker  
Syrian teams’ power forward Samaki Walker posted a brilliant performance to keep Al Jalaa in a competitive position throughout the game. The former National Basketball Association (NBA) Player Walker landed a team-high 25 points,
grabbed 8 rebounds and handed out 3 assists in less than 39 minutes of playing time.
The sharp-shooter Samaki shot 67 percent from the field and 83 percent from the charity strip. Walker utilized each and every opportunity that was provided to him in the game however the Smart Gilas displayed a better performance
in the end and snatched the victory.
Joseph Evans Casio
The home team Smart Gilas’ point guard Joseph Evans Casio provided a substantial support down the stretch to the star player Marcus as the team of Philippines clinched the semi-final berth in the 2011 FIBA championship Cup.
Evans Casio was the second best performer in the Gilas’ line-up as he landed 22 points and dished out 9 assists. Casio not only helped the team with the scoring, the prolific point guard also freed up a number of opportunities
for his teammates to grab the lead. Joseph was absolutely magnificent from beyond the arc as well and buried four blistering 3-poionters to overpower Al Jalaa.   
Micheal Madanly
The Syrian’s scoring machine Micheal Madanly landed 17 points and gathered 5 rebounds to support the top scorer of the team Samaki walker in a hardly fought meeting.
