Marcus Ellis, Paul Van Rietvelde claim Men’s Doubles crown in 2012 Yonex Welsh International
Men’s Doubles partners Marcus Ellis and Paul Van Rietvelde showed superb coordination and unseated Peter Briggs-Harley Towler in the title match of Yonex Welsh International on December 2, 2012.
This grand finale remained in full swing for 45 minutes before ending with 16-21, 21-9 and 21-16 margin.
Both teams made this encounter a memorable contest by testing each other’s skills in the local badminton arena of Cardiff, Wales.
In the opening game, the twosome of Peter and Harley ruled the court but they failed to show consistency in their performance and lost the last two games.
On the other hand, Marcus and Paul forged a fruitful chemistry and reserved the top spot on the victory stand of this International Challenge.
However, they took some to get on the right track as the first set was completely dominated by the higher ranked British team.
Peter and Harley laid the foundation of their supremacy by clinching some back-to-back points after 7-7 and strengthened their grip with 11-8 total before the interval.
After the one-minute interval, they did not show any mercy and unleashed a flurry of power packed strokes.
They kept their challengers under control and won this set with a significant 21-16 score on the board.
However, next game completely changed the scenario as Marcus and Paul sowed a transformed character and brought the contest to the right balance.
They kick-started their campaign with six consecutive points after 3-3 and capitalised this flow to pile up a mountainous figure of 11.
Latter part of the game turned into a dead contest as both partners did not show any sign of confusion and swept the table with a notable lead.
Marcus and Paul, who belong to England and Scotland respectively, maintained the upper hand until the final moments and placed a winning margin of 21-9.
With this impressive performance, they started the third set of the match in high spirits. They did not give the opposing team enough time to get settled and established an unassailable lead.
At mid-game break, they were enjoying a commanding position with 11-8 score and this psychological edge helped them in the second half as well.
Marcus and Paul did not commit even a single mistake and locked the honour with 21-16 total.
