Marcus Fraser aims to soar at the Iskandar Johor Open
Marcus Fraser of Australia has set his sights on becoming the first Australian player to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit, by recording a strong finish at this week’s Iskandar Johor Open.
The tournament is slated to start from Thursday, December 13, 2012, at the prestigious Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club in Johor Bahru.
After finishing third at the UBS Hong Kong Open, Fraser surged to the top of the money list. He then decided to skip the next two tournaments, in a bid to play on the PGA Tour of Australasia and the PGA Tour’s Qualifying School.
In the meantime, Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand recorded a second-place finish at the King’s Cup and displaced him to the second spot on the standings.
Recently, the 34-year-old gave Wiratchant a challenge call, when he announced his commitment to participate in the season-ending event in Malaysia.
Fraser, who trails Wiratchant by around US$25,000, believes that he will have to work really hard, in order to regain the top spot in the money list.
“It’s a fairly close fight between Thaworn and myself but there’re still probably four or five guys out there who still have a chance of winning the Order of Merit. It’s going to be a pretty exciting week for sure,” said Fraser.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he said that he will try to end his 2012 campaign on a high note, by winning the Iskandar Johor Open.
“It’ll be a huge achievement if I become the first Australian to win the Order of Merit title. I love playing in Asia and I’ve got lots of good friends that play on the Asian Tour. It’s good fun coming up to these events and to be able to have the chance
of possibly win the Order of Merit this week,” he said.
Jbe Kruger and Gaganjeet Bhullar, who currently hold the third and the fourth spot, respectively, can only make it to the top of the list, only if they succeed in winning the US$2 million tournament.
In the meantime, they will also have to depend on Wiratchant’s and Fraser’s final position in the tournament.
