Marcus Hahnemann may retire from international football
The United States goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann may retire from international football.
The 37-year-old goalkeeper stated his intention to retire because of a lack of first team opportunities and the emergence of Brad Guzan. Guzan has become Tim Howard’s understudy in the US team.
Hahnemann said, "Tim has been number one for a while and they've got Brad Guzan coming through who's a good keeper, I think they're okay. I was glad we didn't have a game in the last international break and I didn't have to fly back [from] somewhere. It
was nice to have a rest."
The Wolves goalkeeper added, "The way I left it was I told [USA coach] Bob Bradley 'If you need me, give me a call'.
Hahnemann was a part of the last two United States World Cup squads in 2006 and 2010. Yet, the goalkeeper did not make an appearance in either tournament.
The American player was first capped in 1993 after impressing with club side Reading. He received three international caps, but did not play again until June 2003.
The goalkeeper has only played eight times for his country, despite being available for over 17 years.
Hahnemann said, "I haven't played the last few times I've been called up and travelled. You question whether it's worth going? So I don't know [about my future]. We'll see."
Hahnemann signed for Wolves in 2009 and has become the first choice goalkeeper at Molineux. Wayne Hennessey is now the Wolves reserve goalkeeper.
Hahnemann has had a difficult international career. He had to compete with Brad Friedel and Kasey Keller before Howard was introduced as the number one goalkeeper.
At the age of 37, Hahnemann believes that it may benefit his club career if he retires from international football and plays less football.
