Marcus Titus earns Men’s 50m freestyle gold title - 2011 World Deaf Swimming Championships
American swimmer, Marcus Titus earned the gold medal of Men’s 50m freestyle category on the succeeding day of the 2011 World Deaf Swimming Championships, on Monday, August 8, in Coimbra, Portugal.
The competition is a seven-day long course event, supervised by the international aquatic sport’s governing body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).
Marcus improved the Deaf World Record and Championship record of the 50m event, by submitting a wonderful effort of 23.46 seconds. His breath-taking swim was 0.01 seconds under his previous marks of 23.47 seconds, made by him in the preliminary rounds of
the 50m event, earlier in the championship.
He was trailed by Damianos Sevastiadis of Greece, who remained substantially behind the gold medallist and acquired the podium for the silver medal, with a timing of 24.51 seconds. The 25-year-old Sevastiadis edged out his closest competitor and Russian
swimmer, Ilya Sarykin, who clocked a third finest time of 24.54 seconds for third position.
Meanwhile, the arena witnessed the struggling effort of Sarykin’s team-member, Vadim Borovik, who remained just 0.34 seconds away from Sarykin and settled as the fourth best swimmer with a timing of 24.88 seconds.
Moments later, Denys Bystrevskyi of Ukraine surfaced as the fifth position holder of the single-lap event, as he stayed only 0.14 seconds away and ended his swim in a time of 25.02 seconds. Bystrevskyi was followed by his team-member, Volodymyr Natalchuk,
who remained 0.32 seconds behind his former finisher and earned sixth finest spot of the event, by completing his sprint in a time of 25.34 seconds.
Coutinho E. was sighted as the seventh fastest finisher of the freestyle event, as he remained 0.11 seconds slower than Natalchuk and ended his sprint in a time of 25.45 seconds, while Henadzi Tsyron of Belarus was disqualified from the respective meet,
due to a false start.
The session ended after the completion of all scheduled swimming events, while the arena enjoyed the aggressive swims of participating athletes. The championship is subject to conclude on August 8 after the completion of all swimming events.
