Marcus Titus wins Men’s 200m breast-stroke title - 3rd World Deaf Swimming Championships
Marcus Titus won the gold medal of Men’s 200m breast-stroke meet on the second day of the ongoing 3rd World Deaf Swimming Championships, on Monday, August 8, in Coimbra, Portugal.
The World Deaf Championship is a long course event, organised by International sport’s governing body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).
Titus of United States claimed the title of the event in scintillating fashion, as he remained prominently away from his following swimmers and displayed an unmatchable effort of 2 minutes and 16.77 seconds. With his astonishing swim, the 25-year-old Titus
improved the Deaf championship mark, as his time was comfortably under his own previous record of 2 minutes and 27.07 seconds, made by Titus in the qualifying rounds of this event.
In addition, he was only 4.27 seconds behind the Deaf World Record of 2 minutes and 12.50 seconds, set by Terence Parkin of South Africa in 2000.
He was trailed by Andriy Zurgalidze of Ukraine, who remained nearly eight seconds behind Titus and clinched the silver medal, with a timing of 2 minutes and 24.74 seconds. Zurgalidze was 0.99 seconds ahead of his closest swimmer, Ruslan Lebedev of Russia,
who touched the finishing wall and submitted a time of 2 minutes and 25.73 seconds.
Lebedev’s team-member, Ilya Lukyanov emerged as the fourth fastest swimmer of the event, by reporting in a time of 2 minutes and 27.11 seconds. He was trailed by Martin Fomin, who remained 4.67 seconds behind his foregoing competitor and posted a time of
2 minutes and 31.78 seconds.
Great Britain’s Jack McComish was the sixth best swimmer of the event, as he stayed 2.14 seconds behind Fomin and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 33.92 seconds. He was followed by Ukraine’s Dmytro Kheilyk and Netherlands’s Rolan Van Der Lugt, who settled
as the seventh and eighth finishers, as they ended their swims with timings of 2:35.97 and 2:36.92 minutes, respectively.
Furthermore, the winners were awarded medals, while the arena appreciated the efforts of all participants after completion of the swimming events.
