Marcus Tregoning to patiently wait and wisely choose Cavaleiro’s next race
Trainer Marcus Tregoning is satisfied with the way his charge, Cavaleiro, performed in the Group 1 Investec Derby on 2ndJune, 2012 at Epsom. With rider Hayley Turner on his back, he tried his level best but still struggled to keep up.
The son of Sir Percy, out of mare Khibraat, has an impressive record with the exception of his performance in the Derby, where he finished in last place and missed the victory by 19 ½ lengths to the Aidan O’Brien trained Camelot.
The second place was secured by Main Sequence, whereas Astrology finished in third place.
The three-year-old runner has been in good form and demonstrated his superior racing ability at Lingfield in his seasonal debut, where he competed with a 20-1 chance in the Group 3 Betfred Derby Trial Stakes on 12th May, 2012.
Despite the fact that the event was conquered by Main Sequence, while race favourite, Shantaram, finished as a runner-up - Cavaleiro performed extremely well and stood third, 6 lengths adrift of the runner-up.
Marcus Tregoning stated that the horse ran well, and it could have gone worse as he commented:
"He's absolutely fine and took his race well. There was 20 lengths covering the whole field so it wasn't a complete disaster. We'd have loved him to be in the money, but that wasn't to be."
Tregoning further added: "We'll see how he runs next time, but it's always quite difficult, when you're coming off a run like that, knowing where to run them.”
The future of this runner may be uncertain at this point, but he will improve his performance in the races to come. The trainer believes that it is wise to wait and patiently decide where the chestnut colt should go next.
Guy Brook’s Cavaleiro has two impressive victories in the bag from last season.
On 24th August, 2011, Cavaleiro raced as a favourite with a 2-7 chance in the Weatherbys Private Banking Maiden Stakes at Chepstow where he was mounted by Hayley Turner, and defeated the Clive Cox trained, Dont Take Me Alive,
by a margin of 3 lengths.
