Marcus Trescothick’s sensational form stunned Yorkshire
Somerset’s captain, Marcus Trescothick’s, brilliance led the side to a 10-wicket victory over Yorkshire in a match of the County Championship Division One, at the County Ground Taunton. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Somerset-c843 required 228 runs for victory in the game, which their openers,
Trescothick and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Arul-Suppiah-c1084, achieved comfortably with a double century partnership for the first wicket.
The pitch was expected to assist the batsmen and the Yorkshire skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Gale-c1039, decided to bat first after winning the toss. His team did a decent job, scoring 358 runs in their first innings, but it wasn’t a big total considering the flat nature of
the wicket.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yorkshire-c867’s wicketkeeper batsman, Jonny Bairstow, was in phenomenal form, scoring a ton in the first outing. At the time he came out to bat, the visitors were struggling at 75 for three, but batted brilliantly and ended up with 136 runs. His innings included
25 fours, which gave him exactly 100 runs in boundaries.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gary-Ballance-c1465, who batted at number six, also played a gutsy innings of 61 runs. He offered good support to Bairstaw and the pair put together a 167-run stand for the fifth wicket partnership.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Steve-Kirby-c2577 bowled really well for the hosts, picking up three wickets in the innings. He didn’t give away too many opportunities to the batsmen to score runs, which made life difficult for Yorkshire.
It appeared that the batting conditions had eased out when the Somerset openers came out to bat. The pair collected 257 runs for the first wicket and played with a lot of maturity and responsibility. Suppiah was dismissed after adding 95 runs to the total,
but his opening partner didn’t waste the opportunity of making a big one.
Trescothick was dismissed after scoring 189 runs, smashing 17 fours and four monstrous sixes. The Yorkshire bowlers were pleased to see the back of him, but they were given a tough time by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Hildreth-c1647, who managed 87 runs, guiding his side’s total above
450.
Yorkshire’s spinner, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AU-Rashid-c1106, bowled a decent spell for his team, picking up four wickets. He did give away a few runs, but took wickets at a crucial period.
The visitors scored 321 runs in their second innings, but they were hurt by the first innings deficit of 94 runs. Bairstaw continued his brilliant form, scoring 80 runs for his team and got good support from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Lumb-c1981 Root, Gale and Rashid, who all scored half-centuries.
228 looked a decent target, but the home team would have been pleased with the work of their bowlers, especially Kirby, who grabbed a couple of wickets in the Yorkshire innings.
Trescothick’s thunderous 151 runs off just 131 balls made the chase look ridiculously easy. He smashed 21 fours and two massive sixes, guiding Somerset to a victory. He was helped by Suppiah, who remained unbeaten on 67 runs.
