Mardan Mamat aims another victory at the Barclays Singapore Open
Singaporean golf star Mardan Mamat is set to record another victory at the Barclays Singapore Open, when he tees off at the Sentosa Golf Club, Singapore, on Thursday, November 8, 2012.
The three-time Asian Tour winner won the event in 2006, after defeating Nick Dougherty with a one-stroke margin. It was the second victory of his career on the Asian Tour.
According to the golf commentators, Mamat certainly has the potential to win the national Open once again, especially when he is enjoying a great form on the tour.
Earlier this season, he won the ICTSI Philippine Open by defeating Mo Joong-Kyung with an impressive five-stroke margin, and ended his six-year winning drought on the tour.
This week, he plans to add another title to his resume, in a bid to end the 2012 Asian Tour season on a high note.
"I’ve been looking forward to play in this event. It is one of the biggest events in Asia and it’s important to play well this week," said Mardan.
“I was really fortunate to be able to win at home in 2006. I believe if you can do it once, you can do it twice. So we shall see how it goes this week,” added the local ace.
Mamat is one of the six Singaporean players participating in the US$6 million event. The other local players to tee off this week include Lam Chih Bing, Lam Zhiqun, Quincy Quek, Koh Dengshan and Choo Tze Huang.
The veteran hopes that the participation of young talented players in the tournament will ensure the Singaporean flag fly high in the event.
“It’s good to see the youngsters coming up. They are young and I think Murugiah has done a good job in helping our local players and giving them a chance to play at their National Open,” said Mardan.
In the meantime, a number of big names have confirmed their participation in the event.
Some of the prominent names include the world number one Rory McIlroy, the three time winner of the tournament Adam Scott, the three time Masters champion Phil Mickelson and the 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen.
