Mardan Mamat shares the second position at the Asian Tour’s King’s Cup
Mardan Mamat of Singapore carded a two-under par 70, in the second round of the King’s Cup, to take the share of the second position on the leaderboard, on Friday, November 30, 2012.
The US$500,000 event, which is sanctioned by the Asian Tour, is being played at the Singha Park Khon Kaen Golf Club in Thailand.
Mamat, who won the ICTSI Philippine Open earlier this season, fired a nine -under par 63 in the opening round.
On day two, he failed to repeat the heroics of his first-round performance. Yet, he still managed to remain in contention for the top spot in the tournament.
Starting on the back nine of the course, the Singaporean carded birdies on the 11th, 14th, 15th and the 17th hole, against a lone bogey that came on the 16th hole.
He then slowed down on the front nine, recording pars on eight of the nine holes, along with a bogey on the eighth hole.
At the end of his round, he held the clubhouse lead with an 11-under par overall score. However, Supakorn Utaipat surpassed him, later in the day, after posting a 13-under par two-round score.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, Mamat stated that he was pleased with his overall performance in the round, despite struggling on his back nine.
“I played pretty well in my first-nine. I hit some good shots and managed to hole some putts but in my second-nine, I didn’t hit my irons as close to the pin for birdie opportunities. But having said that, I’m still happy by just being able to come back
with an under-par score,” said Mardan.
The veteran star admitted that he will have to hold his nerves in the remaining two rounds, in order to taste success for the second time in this season.
“I believe whoever handles the pressure better will win this week’s tournament. I cannot control what others think, I can only control my own emotions and I’ve to focus on what I have to do.
“After almost two decades of playing experience, I should be able to handle that pressure well,” said Mardan.
