Mardan Mamat takes charge at the Panasonic Open – Asian Tour News
The Panasonic Open comes to the half way stage. The four day event is being hosted by the beautiful par-72, Delhi Golf Course. Mardan Mamat, the veteran from Singapore continued his form in the second round and leads the championship by a good margin.
Mamat is a seasoned player and has been playing for more than fifteen years. He certainly showed his class in the second round by carding a brilliant round of seven-under par, 65. He was brilliant with his hitting and was holding his putts on the second
day.
The 43-year-old Singaporean played exceptional golf during the second day. He started the day with a birdie and never looked back. Mamat had a total of six birdies, an eagle and a single bogey on his card. It was a rather lucky day for the player who looked
in superb form. His eagle came on the par-5, 8th where his approach shot landed within a couple of feet from the hole.
This will be only his second victory playing on the Asian Tour. He is confident of ending his seven year title drought. This course has always paid dividends for the player, as his maiden Asian Tour title came on this course. Mamat has a total score of 12-under
par, 132 and has a good margin of four shots over his nearest competitor.
After completing the round, Mamat said, “I had a really good start and that kept up my confidence. Overall I’m very pleased with the way I’ve putted over the last two days. As long as you don’t make too many silly mistakes on this golf course, it will be
okay. I’m just going to relax and sharpen my putting. I hope to maintain my momentum for the next two days.”
American Ben Fox and the overnight leader Anirban Lahiri follow the leader Mamat. They both are four behind the leader and are hoping to improve their position in the next two rounds.
As for Lahiri, he looked a bit under pressure in the second round. Either it was the conditions or the weather which did not suit him. The youngster still managed to card a steady round of one-under par, 71. He had three birdies and two bogeys on his score
card. Lahiri gave away two shots on 10th and 15th as he was a little disappointed with the way he played during the second day.
Fox posted another under-par round on the second day. He looked in great form with his beautiful approach shots to the green. Fox carded a round of six-under par, 66. His card showed eight birdies including two bogeys. The youngster was excited with the
way he played during the second day and is hoping to continue his momentum.
Himmat Rai of the host country carded a round of five-under par, 67. He has a total two round aggregate score of seven-under par, 137 and is five behind the leader. Rai was bogey free for his round and scored five birdies during the day.
The projected cutline score is set at thee-over par. Players like Gaganjeet Bhullar and Airil Rizman failed to make it through the cutline score.
