Mardy Fish, Robin Soderling, Andrea Petkovic and others withdraw from the French Open – Tennis News
Some of the top players on the ATP and WTA have withdrawn from next week’s French Open in Paris with different injuries and problems.
World number 10, Mardy Fish, of USA heads the list of withdrawals on the men’s side with his place now being taken by Canada’s Frank Dancevic, as it was announced on French Open’s official website.
The American, who rose to his best ever ranking of seven last year, has not played since participating at the US Men’s Clay Court Tennis Championship at the start of last month. Fish faced some health trouble during the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami and was
forced to pull out from following week’s Davis Cup tie between USA and France.
He decided to participate in his home event of Houston but it proved to be a bad decision, as he could not play at this best and was upset by the then world number 110, Michael Russell, in the opener.
It was later discovered that he was struck with extreme fatigue after playing continuously at the highest level for so long.
The 2009 and 2010 French Open runner-up, Robin Soderling, has also announced that he would not be able to make a comeback at the second Grand Slam of the season.
The former fourth ranked player is still recovering from the glandular fever and he has conformed now that he will miss Wimbledon and Olympics too. The Swede has not taken part in any event since winning the SkiStar Swedish Open in last July.
The right-hander is not sure when he would be able to play competitive tennis again but he is hoping to make a comeback before the end of this season.
Soderling said, "I'm 28 and have plenty of good years left in me. I haven't given up on the year. Hopefully I can come back a little, at an OK level. It's difficult to say because this is not really like a regular injury. Even the doctors have trouble telling
me when I can be back. The most important thing is I'm feeling better and better.”
The Swedish star added, "Now I am where I feel pretty good during the days and I can do everything, but training - and especially a little bit more intense training - my body cannot take, I get too tired.”
Spanish player, Pere Riba; and Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay have joined Fish and Soderling in the list of withdrawals.
On the women’s side, Andrea Petkovic heads the players to pull out of the Grand Slam event with a right ankle injury, followed by Daniela Hantuchova, Agnes Szavay, and Timea Bacsinszky.
