Mardy Fish beats David Ferrer in the quarterfinals of 2011 Sony Ericsson Open
America’s Mardy Fish moved past his higher ranked opponent, David Ferrer in straight sets at the quarterfinals of 2011 Sony Ericsson Open on Wednesday. Fish concluded his victory in one hour and twenty two minutes to move it into
the semi finals of the tournament.
The pair’s last meeting had come in 2007 when they met for their third round match at the ATP Masters Series Paris. Ferrer had then outplayed the American in straight sets to level the head-to-head score at 3-3. However, ousting
the Spaniard from Miami, Fish has now taken a 4-3 lead.
The American governed the match entirely, breaking his opponent twice in both sets. Dreaming for a spot in the semi finals, Fish started off great. He struck 64 per cent of first serves and gained an outstanding 90 per cent win
on it. Ferrer on the other hand fired in only a single ace, double faulted three times and pulled in 79 per cent win on his 58 per cent of first serves. As Ferrer didn’t have much luck on his side, he could only manage to save 50 per cent of his breakpoint
opportunities. Fish on the other hand saved 100 per cent of his break point opportunities and stole the first set with a 7-5 score line.
In the final set, Fish fired in four aces and 67 per cent of first serves, gaining an outstanding 92 per cent of points on them. In contrast, Ferrer hit two aces and double faulted two times. He scored 71 per cent of points from
his 50 per cent first serves. Though Ferrer faced 2 break point opportunities, still he couldn’t save them. Fish on the other hand didn’t face any break point opportunity but capitalizing on his first serves gain, he turned up victorious with a 7-5 score line.
With this win, Fish has extended his win loss mark to 13-5 for the season. He will next meet world number two Novak Djokovic of Serbia. This will be the sixth meeting between these two. Their most prominent meetings on court came
at the 2008 ATP Masters Series Indian Wells, where Fish moved past by the Serb in three sets 6-2, 5-7, and 6-3.
The match is going to be truly exciting as both players are carrying their winning momentums all the way.
